Tuscany
is an enchanting place to visit all year long, but on a recent visit to the
charming medieval town of Certaldo Alto I discovered that autumn’s earthy hues
and the quiet serenity that this season brings enhance the region's beauty in
a new and remarkable way.
Found in the southern part of the province of Florence, Certaldo Alto is a medieval
walled town located on a hill above the modern residential and industrial
suburb spread of Certaldo below (hence the name Certaldo Alto, alto meaning
high).
This
lovely town build almost entirely of brick can be reached on foot in 10 min or
by cable car (my choice) from the station in the main piazza in less than 2 minutes.
A terraced garden and walkway overlooking the town walls provide a magnificent view
stretching from the hills of the Val d'Elsa to San Gimignano.
Certaldo
Alto was once home to famed Italian author, poet, and
important Renaissance humanist Giovanni Boccaccio and while there it was easy
to see how such a quaint and charming place could inspire such brilliant work.
For those of you who have never been, take a moment to enjoy my photographic journey through Certaldo Alto.
